            There was an ancient church here, perhaps built in the 13th century as a chapel of
                  ease to Kendal; it disappeared in the 17th century. A new chapel was built in 1699
                  and was demolished about 70 years later. The present church was built 1872-73, architects
                  Brade and Swales. |
