Fletcher Christian was born at Moorland Close, Dean, SW of Cockermouth, 25 September 1764. He was a pupil at Cockermouth Free Grammar School. From age 13 he lived on the Isle of Man.
Fletcher Christian joined HMS Eurydice at Spithead, and in 1786 the Britannia under the command of Lieutenant William Bligh with whom he became good friends. When Captain Bligh was posted to HMS Bounty, Fletcher Christian joined him as master's mate.
Fletcher Christian was the leader of the mutiny on the Bounty in the Pacific, 28 April 1789.
