1890. goto sourcepage 77:- "... About a quarter of a mile from the foot [of Force Gill] is the Lower Foss, forty feet in height, coming over a wall of rock formed like a semi-ellipse. The rock at the bottom for nearly half the height is composed of hard, shaly material; above this is a rusty or discoloured limestone, and a few mountain ash, willow, and birch, with many primroses deck the sombre face of the cliffs." |
