page 137:-  "The Burlington Slate Quarries, situated on Kirkby Fell, near Kirkby-in-Furness, are the largest and most important single industry of their kind in the North of England. These quarries have been worked more or less for more than 200 years, but in the early part of their history they were under several distinct proprietors, by whose names they are still known, such as Fishers, Towns, Lords, Hunters, &c. but subsequently the then Earl of Burlington (who afterwards became Duke of Devonshire) took over all the separate holdings, and since that time they have been merged into one extensive industry."
"The roofing slate obtained from these quarries is very strong and durable, and is of a rich, dark blue colour, and although it is quarried so extensively in North Lancashire and scarcely at all now in Westmorland, the slate is known among Architects, Slate Merchants and Builders, by the name of "Westmorland Dark Blue," indicating that this quality and colour of slate was originally obtained solely and entirely in the last-named County. Now, however, the Westmorland Dark Blue Quarries, such of them as are still working, yield little else than rough slabs and blocks. Output of Burlington Quarries about 13,000 to 14,000 tons a year."
