"Far up the valley towards the head of Little Dale Beck, almost opposite the mouth of the tunnel, a stream, called Force Gill, joins the other rivulet running from Wold" goto source page 77:- "[Wold] Fell. The affluent coming from Whernside is, indeed, in every respect the more important; no one unacquainted with the place would expect such wonders in the matter of waterfalls as it presents. About a quarter of a mile from the foot is the Lower Foss, forty feet in height, coming over a wall of rock formed like a semi-ellipse. The rock at the bottom for nearly half the height is composed of hard, shaly material; above this is a rusty or discoloured limestone, and a few mountain ash, willow, and birch, with many primroses deck the sombre face of the cliffs." "For the next half-mile there is a succession of very similar cascades seven and a half, seven, four and a half, seven, seven and a half, and eight feet in height, and then above the point where the last of these is placed the sides of the gill grow steeper. Suddenly, at a slight bend, rocks tower on either hand and in front; these are somewhat similar in appearance to those seen at Lower Foss, and a splendid fall, forty-nine to fifty feet in height, tumbles over a crag consisting of reddish mottled sandstone below, grit above, and of variable strata in the middle." |
