A bill was placed before parliament for a 6¼mile branch off the Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway, to serve Ennerdale, 1883. It was opposed by the Lake District Defence Society who were against industrial development, and against cheap tourist access to the Lakes. The bill failed.
