Page 383:-  "... Duddon mouth extend about 2 miles seaward of the line joining the points of the entrance. The bar and channels are so changeable that they should not be attempted without local knowledge."
"There are depths of 6 feet (1m8) over Duddon bar, but farther in the channels dry."

"A black conical buoy, with a staff and cage as topmark and marked "D.1," is moored outside the bar. Within the bar, the channel to Millom is marked by black buoys marked from "D.2." to "D.20." Of these, Nos.2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, and 13 are pear-shaped buoys; Nos.6 and 10 are conical buoys with staff and cage topmarks; and Nos.8, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20 are barrel buoys. All these buoys should be left on the port hand when entering."
"Pilots. - There are two pilots; they meet vessels at No.10 buoy."
