hearsay:- |
Motte and bailey castle, overlooking the valley of the River Rawthey. Probably built
by a norman landowner, late 11th century. A typical castle of this period would have
a wooden tower on the motte, defended by a wooden palisade round the edge and by the
ditch at the foot of the motte. The lower area, the bailey, on a raised platform,
would have had a fence around it protecting domestic buildings and perhaps a hall. |
|
In World War II it was a lookout post for the Royal Observer Corps. |
