story:-
Lizzy Baty was born at Castle Douglas, about 1729. She eloped with John Baty, local schoolmaster, climbing down a ladder from her bedroom window on a snowy night. They settled on Bewcastle Fell and made a living by fortune telling.
"An lang the lassies leave to tell
To neighbours and to kin
How Lizy with her witchery
She'd gard them dance and grin."
She was known as the Brampton Witch, died age 88 at Bleach House (now Low Beckside), Brampton, 1817.
