    The Author makes Windermere 1 Mile
& 240 Yards Broad at Miller ground; whereas Crosthwaite
could not stretch it to more than 7 Furlongs at said place

    If it be asked why Crosthwaite has
made the Remarks in this Book; his reasons are as follows;
First, because it was not lawful for this author to follow
Crosthwaite in the Lakes without making actual Surveys with
Additions & Improvements; Second, this minute &
accurate Survey as it is very unjustly called, made a great
noise in England for 3 years before it came out, & all
this while did in some measure hinder the sale of
Crosthwaites Maps, which are proved to be accurate &
useful too; Third, because this great Book is a shameful
Imposition upon the Public, & will withall if not
Exploded, hurt the Touring business, with Crosthwaites sale
of his Maps, Museum &c. which is his principal Support,
& who has Expended many Hundred Pounds for the benefit
of said business, himself & Family.
