Fountain, Milnthorpe, Cumbria, SD49818150 --
The Fountain, Milnthorpe was the town's water supply up to 1906.
The Fountain, at the back of a car park off the main road, is on the site of a natural
spring. The spring can be seen below a grating.
After a Miss Rawlinson fell in the fountain, 1880, on her way home from evensong,
protecting stones were placed around it. After a circus elephant slipped in the fountain,
1941, the spring was covered with concrete. The Fountain was restored in 2000; it
looks rather sad fitted with a plain tap on a plain pipe.
