Fresco of St Cuthbert,
Carlisle
SOCIETY OF ANTIQUARIES.
March 30. ...
Dr. Augustus Guest, F.S.A. communicated an account which he
had recieved from Mr. C. H. Purday, accompanying a drawing
of a fresco recently discovered on the north-east pier of
the central tower of Carlisle cathedral. Dr. Guest suggested
that this painting was intended to represent an incident in
the life of St. Cuthbert as related by Beda, where the death
of St. Aidan was revealed to the holy man while tending his
flocks. This explanation, however, was not considered
satisfactory, inasmuch as there is no flock represented in
the picture. At the head of the sleeper are two horned
animals, seated in something like heraldic postures. The
Almighty is appearing to him, and an angle, now partially
obliterated, is making some direct communication to his
ears.
