 In our ancient law books, Tithes are briefly defined "to be  
an ecclesiastical inheritance or property in the Church,  
collateral to the estate of the lands thereof;" and no other 
support for the Clergy appears so likely to produce  
efficient ministers to preach "right things" rather than  
"smooth things," and thus keep up a sound tone of religion  
and morals in the country.
