afforded a clue to the assessors of the property tax which soon
after came into operation; and this mine - which 200 years ago
had been valued at fifteen shillings and fourpence - was
accordingly rated at £2,700 a year. The consumption appears
to be constantly increasing; but how far a permanency of supply
can be calculated upon, is questionable. The most prolific part
of the mountain may be already explored, and the principal body
or trunk of the mine excavated, so that posterity must be
contented with gleaning from the branches.
