WORKINGTON, a sea port, market-town, and parish, in Allerdale ward, above Derwent, Cumberland, near the fall of the Derwent and Cocker into the ocean, 311 miles from London; containing 1160 houses and 5716 inhabitants, of whom 1055 were returned as being employed in various trades, principally in the salt works, salmon fishery, and coal trade, there being upwards of 100 vessels employed in the coal trade to and from this port; of late years very extensive and convenient butchers shambles have been erected, being a great improvement to the town.
