Guide book, A Guide to the Lakes, by Thomas West, 1778, published W Pennington, Kendal, Westmorland, and J Richardson, Royal Exchange, London, 11th edition, 1821.
The frontispiece is a hand coloured engraving - Grasmere, drawn by I Feary, engraved by Robert havell and Son; and printed on page 13 is an engraving of the gate tower of Lancaster Castle - recorded separately.
At the start of the text is a hand coloured map, A Map of the Lakes in Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, engraved by Paas, 53, Holborn, London - recorded separately.
This edition has several addenda - Dr Brown's description of the vale and lake of Keswick; an extract from Dr Dalton's descriptive poem about the beauties of the vale of Keswick; an extract of Mr Gray's Journal of his northern tour; Mr Cumberland's Ode to the Sun; a night piece on the Banks of Windermere; description of Dunald Mill Hole; a Tour to the caves in the West Riding of Yorkshire; further account of the Furness Fells; account of Ennerdale; specimens of Cumbrian dialect; Mrs Radcliffe's description of the scenery about Skiddaw.
This copy of the guide is in an unattractive binding, probably a rebinding done early in the 20th century?
