WE had now arrived on the confines of those romantic scenes,
which were the principal inducement to this tour. Here
therefore we proposed to make some pause; and pay a little
more attention to the country, than a hasty passage through
it, would allow.
But to render a description of these scenes more
intelligible; and to shew more distinctly the sources of
that kind of beauty, with which they abound; it may be
proper, before we examine the scenes themselves, to take a
sort of analytical view of the materials, which compose them
- mountains - lakes - broken grounds - wood - rocks -
cascades - vallies - and rivers.
